How To Make Your Own Cute Canvas Storage Bins
Sorry for the lack of updates lately. With everything going on in the world right now, all the politics and just the general depression that I have this time of year, it’s been hard to find enthusiasm for anything. My home office is in our basement, which is awesome and amazing for privacy and quiet, but it’s not so good for someone who gets really sad when there is no sunlight. So this past weekend, I went ahead and took my husband’s advice to move my whole office upstairs.
We have a really rather large front room, which is open to the whole first level and has a huge window to let the sunshine in. We haven’t ever figured out a use for this room since we already have two living rooms (one on the main floor and one in the basement). Since it’s the first thing you see when you enter the house, we’ve not wanted to clutter it up with anything, but we’ve been here over a year now and the room has been used as a parlor, a play room, a photo studio and more. Nothing ever stays long. But what the heck, eh? I may as well use it as my office and try and be productive!
Anyway, the bottom line is that I need this room to help my productivity, which means I need a TON of my everyday supplies in here. But I also need it to stay clean, clutter-free and cute! I have some really adorable cubicle shelves I bought from Target a while back, but they are best used with those nice canvas storage bins inside. Unfortunately basic storage totes (one color, nothing fancy) start at about $10-12. The fancier ones with better colors and designs ranger from $20 – 25 each! I have EIGHTEEN empty shelves to fill. I just can’t afford that kind of money! Thankfully, I had some old canvas bins that came with a shelf unit I bought my husband several years ago. They are pretty ugly – a basic grey/green color. They aren’t totally the correct size, as they aren’t square but rectangle. But they fit pretty well and work fine enough. You can find these kind for around $4-6 somewhere like Big Lots or other types of stores. Much more affordable!
Anyway, given that I had them on hand and knew I was going to need them, I decided to go ahead and try my hand at making them cute! I have a ton of sharpies in my stash, so I grabbed Mark and had him help me out. When Daniel saw what we were doing, he wanted to do his bit, so in the end it was a family project! The final result was so fun! I love how they turned out. So cute and really helpful!
