Patriotic Dipped Oreos
Looking for an easy red, white and blue treat for your Memorial Day or 4th of July BBQ, picnic, or potluck? Try this simple chocolate-dipped Patriotic Oreos recipe! It’s pretty and delicious, and it takes no time at all!
The summer is full of opportunity for patriotic dessert ideas, and I love coming up with new ways to show our patriotic spirit. But I can’t really take credit for this one. It isn’t a new idea, but it’s one I really like, and it’s so simple to do. My kids LOVE to help out with this one, and it’s a great one for children to do because it requires no cooking or special preparations.
It’s a quick and easy dessert that looks spectacular, tastes great and keeps well, so everyone will be impressed.
Also, it’s really easy to make this one gluten free, as Oreo makes a really nice GF cookie, and it’s nearly indistinguishable from the regular version. Plus, you can use an off-brand cookie if you prefer, or if money is an issue, and it’s just as good.
As for the coating, let’s talk about almond bark. Using almond bark, vanilla candy coating or melting wafers will yield a shiner presentation than just using white chocolate chips. Almond bark is not made from almonds. Depending on where you are in the world the vanilla candy coating is called different things.
Why Is It Called Almond Bark?
Almond Bark gets its name because it was originally used to cover almonds. It’s actually still used to cover nuts of all sorts. It is a vanilla flavored candy coating, which is a chocolate-like confection made with vegetable fats instead of cocoa butter and with coloring and flavors added. It is commonly used to cover or dip fruits, caramel, oats, granola, nuts, cookies, or crackers, in place of real chocolate.
What Are Candy Melts?
Candy melts are similar to regular chocolate, except instead of using cocoa butter, they use palm kernel oil and other vegetable oils. This means they don’t need to be tempered when melted, and you can get that great finish when you use them to coat your desserts and treats.
What to Do If Your Candy Melts Clump
Whether you are using plain chocolate, candy melts, almond bark or melting wafers, sometimes your coating will start to clump up. Or maybe it is just too thick and doesn’t really flow off your spoon or coat evenly. To combat this, add ½ tsp of vegetable oil or melted coconut oil to thin it out until it flows. I prefer the coconut oil method, as I think the subtle flavor is better, but they both work just fine.
Why Does it Keep Hardening So Fast?
The thing about melting wafers and even chocolate is that it has to stay warm to keep its pourable form. There are a few tricks to help out. First, if you are using a microwave, use a glass measuring cup instead of a plastic bowl to melt them in. The glass holds the heat a lot longer, which will keep the chocolate from hardening.
Another good trick is to keep a pot of very hot water for your bowl of chocolate to rest on. The heat from the water underneath the bowl will keep the chocolate at the right temperature. Just stir the chocolate once in a while to distribute the heat evenly.
The most important tip is to work quickly. Have everything set up so you’re ready to go as soon as the chocolate is melted. Have all of your tools set out, and make sure you know where your starting point and ending points are. That way you can simply grab your food, dip and set it on your tray.
In this recipe, you aren’t really dipping your Oreos, as much as using a mold to coat them, which means you have a little bit of an easier time. But these are still good tips for working with melting wafers and other candy coatings.
Onto the recipe!
Ingredients
- Oreos
- White Candy Coating or Almond Bark
- Vegetable Oil or melted coconut oil
- Blue & Red Candy melts
Instructions
Begin by adding your candy wafers or almond bar to a glass measuring cup, then microwave for 60 seconds. Using a spoon, poke at the chocolate to see if it has started to melt. Keep microwaving in 30 second intervals, stirring after each time until you can easily stir it.
You may need to add a little coconut oil to help it along, and it will probably take 3 – 5 turns in the microwave until it is done. Be sure not to overdo it, as you can burn the chocolate. Once the chocolate can run off of a spoon, it is ready.
Fill the cavity of a round mold about 2/3 full. Then press an Oreo cookie into each one. The chocolate will spill up over the cookie, and that is fine.
Add some extra chocolate so that the Oreo is fully covered.
Place the molds into a freezer for about 10 minutes until the chocolate is fully set.
While you wait, place the red and blue candy melts into their own piping bags, melting them down until they are ready to pour. Create a very small hole to drizzle from by cutting the very tip off each bag.
Remove the Oreos from the freezer and pull from the molds. Use each of the piping bags to drizzle chocolate in a design of your choice.
Add your sprinkles immediately so that they stick to the still-wet chocolate.
These are such a great little treat to take to a Fourth of July barbecue or potluck. They are adorable and vibrant, and they are delicious to boot! No one is going to turn one of these down. Plus, they’re very filling, so one goes a long way.
These can be made for any holiday, as well. Use different colored chocolate melts to turn them into the perfect dessert for any holiday you want. Red and green for Christmas, orange and black for Halloween, red and pink for Valentine’s day. It’s totally customizable, which is awesome.
