Unfinished Side – Place SC across straight edge of SIDE, evenly spaced. Whatever number of stitches you place, do your best to place the same number of SC across the straight edge of other side. This is not crucial, but do your best to get close to the same number, at least, just so your purse has a “consistent” look. Fasten off.
THIRD SIDE/STRAP – CH 201.
Row 1 – SC in second chain from hook and in each remaining CH to the end – 200 SC. Chain 1. Turn.
Row 2 – SC in each to end. 200 SC
Row 3 – SC in each to end. 200 SC
Row 4 – SC in each to end. 200 SC. Fasten off with long enough yarn to use for joining ends of strap together.
Join strap together (making sure your strap is straight and not twisted) so you have one neat circle of crochet.
Using seam as middle point, count 30 stitches back to the right. At that stitch, attach yarn with a SC. Continue SC in each of the next 59 stitches, for a total of 60. CH 1. Turn.
SC in the 60 SC of the previous row. Fasten off.
At the same spot on the other side of strap, attach yarn and work 60 SC, doing your best to match the stitches you worked on the other side. CH 1. Turn.
SC in the 60 SC of the previous row. Fasten off.
ASSEMBLY
Start attaching one side to the side/strap by attaching Trim Yarn at first of 60 SC just added. Place SC in each of the 60 SC around, joining the side/strap to the circular edge of side.
Attach the other side to the side strap in the same manner as the first side, placing SC in each of the 60 corresponding stitches to join.
TOP FLAP OF BAG
Row 1 – Attach trim color to the last stitch in the side/strap to the right of the top back of bag, as shown in image. Place SC there and in every stitch across the top of the back, finishing with one SC in the first stitch of the side/strap on the left. CH 1. Turn.
Row 2 – SC in each stitch of previous row. CH 1. Turn.
Row 3 through 9 – SC in each stitch of previous row. CH 1. Turn.
Row 10 – Work 1 SC DECR in first two stitches. SC in each stitch across to last two. Work 1 SC DECR in last two stitches. CH 1. Turn.
Row 11 through 17 – Work 1 SC DECR in first two stitches. SC in each stitch across to last two. Work 1 SC DECR in last two stitches. CH 1. Turn.
Row 18 – You need to calculate your stitches. Take the number of stitches you have. Subtract 5. Divide Remaining number in half. Subtract 1 from that number to account for DECR. (For example, if you have 33 stitches across at the end of row 17, subtracting 5 leaves you with 28 stitches. Half of that is 14. Subtract 1 to account for the DECR worked on each side and that leaves you with 13.)
Work 1 SC DECR in first two stitches and then one SC in each stitch until you reach your number. (If your number was 13, you’ll be placing SC in 12 more stitches.)
Chain 5. Skip next 5 stitches. Place 1 SC in next stitch and remaining stitches to last 2 stitches. Work 1 SC DECR in last two stitches. (Should be the same amount of stitches as you calculated in the beginning.) CH 1. Turn.
Row 19 – 1 SC DECR in first two stitches. SC in each stitch across (including 5 placed over the chain of 5) to last two. Work 1 SC DECR in last two stitches. CH 1. Turn.
Row 20 through 26 – 1 SC DECR in first two stitches. SC in each stitch across to last two. Work 1 SC DECR in last two stitches. CH 1. Turn.
Fasten Off at the end of Row 26.
FLAP TRIM
Attach yarn used for strap/side at the place where the strap and flap connect, as shown in picture. Place SC there and evenly to other side of flap, ending in the stitch where the flap and strap connect. Fasten off.
Sew button on where shown.
Optional: Add appliques to your purse to decorate it up.
